Fashion Turns ‘Scary Beautiful’

For thousands of years women have altered their appearance to meet the expectations of the ideal body. Think corsetry, contortion, Chinese foot binding and neck stretching.
This is not a forgotten concept; modern fashion itself embodies the manipulation of the female form. Usually this manipulation is as simplistic as changing the colour of our hair, wearing makeup, or wearing clothes that accentuate certain areas while hiding others. In recent years plastic surgery has become the norm…
Don’t get me wrong – I love to dress up! Getting ready is my favourite part of the day! But as the fashion images we as women compare ourselves to become more and more idealized and increasingly retouched, where is the line drawn between attainable goals and complete fantasy?

This concept is explored by South African designer Leanie van der Vyver as a part of her grad project at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. Her project dubbed ‘Scary Beautiful’ shown here:

An exert from design-milk.com says this about the project:

She discovered that generally people are not satisfied with what they look like and that “perfection according to the beauty and fashion standards has reached a climax. Humans are playing God by physically and metaphorically perfecting themselves.” Scary Beautiful is a project that explores what lies beyond this perfection we all wish to reach by inflicting unexpected new beauty standards.

Has fashion really reached a climax? Many trends have already come full circle! And if so, where do we go from here?
